Chribrydon Dairy Goats

  An Unlikely Hero

AmbroseOur senior herdsire *B Pampatike Ely's Ambrose became a lifesaver on the last day of June 2004. We had just finished with evening chores and were hurrying to get dinner ready so we could take our puppy to obedience class. Our son Bryan was visiting from Georgia and a buyer for a couple of kids had stopped by.

We were standing on the porch visiting when a truck came roaring up the driveway. It was our veterinarian's truck we but couldn't imagine why she was coming to our farm since all was well here. She and her associate jumped out of the truck and hurried to us saying they needed to draw blood from one of our bucks and away they went down the hill to the barn.

Don went to see what the problem was. The vet had a very sick doe kid in the back seat of her truck. It was near death due to a severe worm infestation. She sedated Ambrose and drew a pint of blood from him and proceeded back to her patient in the truck. The two vets put the doe kid on the tailgate of the truck and with Don holding the kid's head steady they performed a transfusion. By the time the vets checked to make sure Ambrose was alright, the kid was able to lift its head.

A few days after the event we received a little note from the owner and her children thanking us for helping save their goat and wanting to meet Ambrose, the blood donor. We were so pleased to be able to have a small part in saving a life.

Since this story was first written Ambrose has donated blood two or three more times. He is truly a special buck!

A final note, sadly, we lost Ambrose on November 1, 2007. He was a wonderful, gentle buck and is sorely missed.
